Mercuria is a major player in the Physical and Financial Global Commodity markets, with major trading centres in London, Geneva, Houston, Singapore, Shanghai and Beijing. We actively trade in all the major commodity asset classes, from Crude and Refined oil products, to power & gas, coal and emissions, through to freight, metals, and agricultural products.

The Technology team is a global organisation with its focal development hubs in London and Houston. We currently have a mandate to build out our existing and next-generation greenfield platforms to become best-of-breed cross-commodity-asset-class systems with a focus on automation, optimization, innovation, and control. We work on a daily basis with our partners in Front Office Trading, Risk, Operations, Physical Commodity Logistics, Finance, Treasury, Credit, Legal and Compliance to ensure the systems we deliver are truly world class.

 

Context

The role is based in Mercuria’s Houston office working as part of the global Trading/Risk Development Team. The purpose of the role is to work closely with Front Office to automate and onboard their existing processes to Mercuria’s strategic technology platform. The candidate will be responsible for the full development life cycle from initial analysis, development, testing as well as supporting the overall platform and team.  The role requires excellent communication skills and Commodities experience covering the North American Power & Gas markets.

 

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with the business to understand and deeply analyse their current processes.
  • Define and deliver a stream of technical solutions following software engineering best practices.
  • Work with the global technology teams to align development to company’s strategic architecture.
  • Maintenance and support of existing production platform including enhancements and bug fixes.
  • Status reporting to both business and management.
  • Documentation of processes and implementation.

 

Technical Expertise

  • 5+ years developing enterprise applications in Java/C# (experience of both languages beneficial).
  • 5+ years Commodities trading industry experience covering North American Power and Gas markets.
  • Strong SQL database design and implementation experience and some NoSql database (Mongo) useful.
  • DevOps best practices including automated build, test and deployment.
  • Experience or interest working with multiple languages such as Java, C#, Python.
  • Knowledge of Openlink Endur ETRM system beneficial.

 

Non-technical Skills

  • Strong academic or professional record in a quantitative subject to degree level.
  • Ability to communicate well with business users and clearly explain technical concepts.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Self-motivated
  • Effective planning and prioritisation of work.
