SMBC – Accounting Policy Specialist

 

Overview:

We are seeking an Accounting Policy Specialist for SMBC NY Branch, SMBC Americas Holdings, Inc. and its U.S. subsidiaries (including a broker dealer, swap dealer, lessor entities and commercial bank, among others). This position operates in a fast-paced environment and has visibility across many SMBC entities and throughout the Controllers’ Department. This position sits within the Bank Accounting Group and the Controllers’ Department. He / She reports to the Director of Accounting Policy and participates in a weekly meeting with the CFO of SMBC’s Bank Holding Company, SMBC Americas Holdings, Inc. The accounting policy specialist ensures compliance with technical accounting standards including U.S. GAAP and IFRS. He / She researches U.S. GAAP and IFRS to provide answers related to: general accounting questions, implementation of emerging guidance and proposed business transactions or financial statement preparation / review.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Tracking, implementation & presentation of emerging guidance (including CECL, Leases and Revenue Recognition)
  • Preparing & updating U.S. GAAP & IFRS accounting policies including for the above-mentioned entities
  • Reviewing transactions & performing the accounting analysis to determine the accounting treatment
  • Financial statement review including for the above-mentioned entities
  • Attending industry meetings / conferences

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Accounting
  • CPA (or equivalent)
  • 5-7 years of either public or public & private accounting experience in financial services working on investment securities, loans, leases and derivatives OR 5-7 years of public accounting experience (accounting advisory or on call experience is preferred) and a very good understanding of U.S. GAAP (Knowledge of IFRS and / or Japanese GAAP is a plus but not required).
  • Research skills, analytical skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite Products, business writing skills, presentation skills and technical accounting skills (e.g., derivatives, loans, investments, consolidation, transfers of financial assets, guarantees, revenue recognition, leasing and fair value)
